Have you ever been invited to an event and felt like you don’t belong? You attend. Smile. Do all you can to fit in. Use all your time-honoured skills to try to connect. Only to be left feeling like an impostor, the proverbial fish out of water.
Rejected by Invitation
I remember receiving an invitation and several email communications to attend a much-publicised women’s event. A friendly message even confirmed my expected attendance a couple of hours before the event.
My arrival was met with raised eyebrows. I was told in a loud voice that the event was “Invitation-only”. My name was not on “the list”. Mortified, I offered my invitation and the confirmation on my phone. A hastily scrawled name tag was slapped on my chest. Amid non-subtle throat clearing and rolling eyes, I was shoved into an empty seat.
Doubly rejected
My attempt at introductions was left hanging in the air. The lady next to me turned her back on me and resumed her conversation with the rest of the table. Bravely I pasted a pseudo-sophisticated mask on my face as I silently prayed for deliverance while contemplating a quick getaway.
Feeling rejected, unwanted, and inconsequential, I escaped at the first opportunity. I cried a river all the way home, vowing never to accept another invitation.
You will feel ‘belonging’ when you’re in the right crowd.
Until out of the blue, a Facebook “Live” led to an invitation to join a Virtual Woman’s Village. Kind words and friendly eyes dared me to risk another rejection. My tentative steps were welcomed with genuine smiles. Welcoming eyes lit up as I dared to speak my name. Deep within my soul, I sensed the unfamiliar feeling of belonging. Soon I knew that I was home, safely surrounded by sisters to help guide me along my path. Sisters who help me to embrace my truth. Sisters who listen to my story and share their own.
Take a chance at Belonging
Dare to take another chance. Dare to take the hands of women who have dared to walk this path before you. Dare to take up the space in the circle that has been reserved especially for you. Dare to find your way home to your Village. Back to where your sisters are waiting to welcome you home.
